Blush Metallic Elephants

2015-06-20T13:40:37-05:00June 20th, 2015|Cakes|0 Comments

I was asked to make a small wedding cake for this weekend.  The bride wanted to incorporate design details from previous cakes into one design.  She absolutely loved the elephants from the Henna-Mehndi cake except she wanted to omit the Indian theme, have them painted a blush metallic, and have their initals on each elephant.  She also loved the painted roses design but wanted the colours to be more muted so that it looked like a water colour painting. The elephants were sculpted out of polymer clay so that they can last as a keepsake.  The cake flavour was a Classic Chocolate

Finding Nemo Cake and Cookies

Elliott loves the movie Finding Nemo.  He's watched it so many times that he knows the movie off by heart so it was a given that his 3rd birthday party would be Finding Nemo themed.  For the cake, I wanted to make an under the sea scene with some characters from the movie as toppers.  I decided on Nemo, Dory, and Pearl for the toppers and sculpted them out of modelling chocolate.  The top tier was a vegetarian chocolate cake with vegetarian chocolate buttercream.  I also added chocolate crispy pearls to the buttercream for an added crunchy surprise!  The bottom tier was a classic vanilla cake

I was asked to make farewell University of Guelph cupcakes.  I wanted to create a mix of designs and decided on simple Thank You plaques, Begging Bear sculptures and Old Jeremiah Cannons. The Begging Bear is a 7½-foot-tall sculpture that has become a beloved icon to not only University of Guelph student, but also to the residents of Guelph. The bear can often be found decorated or dressed up, making it a must-see for passersby on Gordon Street. The cannon, named “Old Jeremiah”, is a British naval gun, rumoured to have been used in the War of 1812.  It is a long-standing Guelph

Fantasy Flower Cake

2015-05-11T07:57:36-05:00May 11th, 2015|Cakes|0 Comments

Elliott's daycare has two wonderful ladies who look after the children.  Today is one of their birthdays and so I decided to make a cake for her.  It's the least I can do as a Thank You for looking after Elliott 5 days a week!  The fantasy flower on the cake was originally supposed to be a Magnolia, but I ended up adding more petals because I thought it looked a little sparse.  The cake is a Classic Chocolate Cake with Blackberry buttercream. Happy Birthday Dyann!

Métis Themed Cake

2015-04-26T19:32:52-05:00April 26th, 2015|Cakes|0 Comments

I was asked to make a Métis themed birthday cake for a renowned Métis artist, scholar and community activist.  Beading, Métis sash and Fiddles are all things that are important to her and so, were incorporated into the design of the cake.  The Métis beading pattern piped on the side of the cake was inspired by artwork done by Christi Belcourt (another renowned Métis artist!).  The Fiddle and sash were sculpted out of modelling chocolate.  The cake had alternating Classic Vanilla cake and Classic Chocolate cake with Hazelnut Praline buttercream, Blackberry buttercream, and Chocolate buttercream. Happy Birthday Maria!

Easter Cakes

2015-04-05T14:45:06-05:00April 5th, 2015|Cakes|0 Comments

With 2 Easter dinners to attend, I needed 2 Easter cakes.  I made both cakes in the same flavour but decorated them differently.  One was simply covered with blackberry buttercream and topped with a nest of 3 speckled eggs.  The other was also covered in blackberry buttercream, however the sides were decorated with candy coated eggs.  Cakes have alternating chocolate and vanilla cake layers with hazelnut, blackberry, and chocolate buttercream in between.

Easter Chick Cookies

2015-04-01T23:37:42-05:00April 1st, 2015|Cookies|0 Comments

I decided to make Easter cookies for Elliott's daycare.  I've always wanted to try 3D cookies and so decided on 3D chicks!  To achieve the fluffy feathered look, I rolled the chicks in tinted desiccated coconut before baking.  After baking, I added a beak, eyes, and feet with royal icing.  I also made cookie bases for them to sit on and added a chocolate truffle speckled egg on the base. Happy Easter Everyone!
