Hello Kitty

2014-10-25T21:32:15-05:00October 25th, 2014|Cakes|0 Comments

My brother's niece, Lillian, celebrated her 5th Birthday this weekend.  I was fully expecting another Frozen themed cake since her cousin, Leah (my niece), share the same interests.  I was pleasantly surprised when a Hello Kitty themed was requested because #1 I have not done a Hello Kitty themed cake before and #2 Who doesn't like Hello Kitty?!  Hello Kitty is sculpted out of fondant.  The two tiered cake consisted of two cake flavours.  The top tier is a vanilla custard cake with raspberry buttercream and the bottom tier is a chocolate cake with raspberry buttercream. Happy 5th Birthday Lillian!

Little Anna

When I asked my niece what kind of birthday cake she wanted for her 3rd birthday, she said "Anna".  So, another frozen cake it is!  I wanted to do something a little different though.  Since Norah is turning 3, I thought it would be appropriate to make a "Little Anna" figurine.  Actually, my favourite song from Frozen is "Do you want to build a snowman?" sung by little Anna so it was a lot of fun sculpting her.  Little Anna is made of modeling chocolate.  The 2 tiered cake is a chocolate cake with both Strawberry and Chocolate buttercream. Happy Birthday Norah!

Ruffle Baby Shower

My cousin and his wife are expecting a baby girl!  I was asked to make their baby shower cake and was pretty much given carte blanche as far as design goes.  I've seen ruffle style cakes before and have always wanted to try this technique out.  Although a bit time consuming, I'm absolutely in love with the final effect.  It's so very girly - perfect to honour a baby girl to be!  The topper figurine is made out of polymer clay and so, can survive the test of time as a keepsake.

TMNT

Teenage mutant ninja turtles Teenage mutant ninja turtles Teenage mutant ninja turtles Heroes in a half shell, turtle power! This cake brought back sweet memories of watching TMNT as a kid everyday after school!  I had heard that a reboot of TMNT was out in theatres and so, was not surprised when I was asked to make a TMNT themed cake.  The new turtles definitely look edgier but I think I prefer the old school version of these guys.  These old school Turtle figurines were sculpted out of fondant.

White Magnolias

I love magnolias.  I love that they bloom in early spring - seeing the trees covered in large blossoms certainly do help chase the away the winter blues!   I had never made gumpaste magnolias before so I was so excited when I was asked to make a wedding cake with these beautiful blooms on it.

Let it go!

My niece Leah had her 5th birthday party this weekend.  I've made her birthday cake every year - except last year.  Last year, I was so busy with our move that I didn't have time to make her cake.  So this year I had to make it up to her!  I asked her what kind of cake she wanted for her birthday and she said "Elsa".  I wasn't surprised.  I think you'd be hard pressed to find a little girl who is not obsessed with Elsa and everything Frozen. Elsa's ice castle was made from melted isomalt sugar and poured into a

I love making children's birthday cakes and making this Under the Sea cake was no exception.  All the sea creatures were sculpted from fondant.

Henna-Mehndi Elephants

I've always admired painted cakes so when the opportunity arrived to try my hand at one for my inlaws' 40th Wedding Anniversary, I jumped at the chance.  With cocoa butter, the sides of the cake were hand painted (no stencils!) to resemble bridal henna-mehndi.  The elephants were sculpted using polymer clay and then painted and embellished with swarovski crystals.

How time flies!  Elliott turned 2 and we threw him a pirate themed birthday party.  He's still too young to pick his own theme so I picked the theme based on the cake that I wanted to make! Photos by Brian Wiebe Photography

We hosted a baby shower for some friends of ours.  The lovely couple are expecting their first baby girl in July - so what better way to shower the parents-to-be, than with a pretty in pink & aqua cake with a pink peony gum paste flower and baby themed shortbread cookies!
